First Visit

What to Expect

You and your pets will love it here! The first step to a fantastic visit is scheduling an appointment at a time convenient for you. We don’t want you to feel rushed! If your pet is not used to traveling in the car, make sure to acclimate your pet by taking a few short trips around the block in the days before your appointment. A pet seat-belt or crate will help your pet feel more secure while the car is in motion. Don’t forget the collar and leash for your dog, or a carrier for your cat!

Before your visit, have your previous veterinary records transferred to our office (if applicable). This will help us understand your pet’s medical history and it will provide accurate vaccination records. Also, bring a list of your pet’s medications so we can add them to your file.

We recommend that you arrive at your appointment a few minutes early. This will help your pet get used to the office, and it will give you time to complete required paperwork**. It’s helpful to make a written list of all your questions prior to your visit so you don’t forget to ask anything.

Be Proactive for Your Pets

We believe in taking a proactive approach to your pet’s health, rather than reactive whenever possible. They say “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” and whoever “they” are is right! We’ll give you our recommendations for keeping your pets as happy and healthy as possible, and we’ll educate you as to why they’re important so you can make the best decisions for them.

This includes annual veterinarian exams (or every 6 months if you have a senior pet), bloodwork, vaccinations, fecal and heartworm testing, flea and heartworm prevention (and tick prevention depending on your pet’s lifestyle). This also includes recommendations for nutrition and dietary supplements, exercise, mental stimulation, socialization, and training. Because we want your pets to be a part of your family for as long as possible, and the healthier we keep them, the happier you can be with them.

We spend the time getting to you know you and your pet by taking a thorough history at every visit, and work with you to formulate a diagnostic and treatment plan that works best for everyone. Because of this, we ask that you allow ample time for your appointments with us, and have the person who knows the most about your pet bring him or her to the hospital – this is ideally the primary caretaker and an adult with financial responsibility.

As medical professionals, a visit to the veterinarian should be treated similarly to a visit to your own doctor – we take a thorough history, perform a full physical exam, and make recommendations for diagnostic tests and treatments based on your pet’s medical history and any current medical issues. We’ll even send home a summary of the visit with treatment instructions and further recommendations that you can share with the entire family.
